APPF has partnered with AudExperts and Dr Keith Darrow, and are doing a unique South African-only offer on an 8 hour course on the 29th and 30th November 2022!!

This is the inaugural offering of the Alzheimers Disease and Dementia Care course.

This course is the prerequisite to applying for status as a Certified Dementia Practitioner with the International Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (ICCDP).

Current State:

One in 3 seniors dies with dementia – the greatest neuropsychological disease of our time. While there are many forms of Dementia, including the most common type – Alzheimer’s – there is much to learn about the underlying causes and risk factors for developing dementia as we age.  In the past decade, an overwhelming number of peer-reviewed research studies have documented the robust correlation of untreated hearing loss and the increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. On the flip-side, numerous studies, including the Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care (2020) have pointed to the treatment of hearing loss as the #1 modifiable lifestyle factor for preventing cognitive decline and dementia.

Future State:

It is important that hearing healthcare providers, especially those in private practice, embrace their role at the forefront of cognitive health and learn to integrate this in to their practices. While many in hearing healthcare have become increasingly comfortable discussing these correlations with their patients, a unified approach to integrating cognitive health, from screenings to treatment recommendations, is needed. Hearing healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to be a tremendous resource for their patients and families; thus it is important to expand our scope of practice to include cognitive healthcare.
